After three weeks of underperforming sequels, Disney will reverse the trend with Toy Story 4 [TOYS4]. Pixar returns to their original franchise for what is said to be their last sequel for the foreseeable future. Woody, Buzz and gang are back along with new toys including a craft creation named Forky. Toy Story 3 opened nine years ago to $110.3 million and totaled $415 million. Since then, Pixar sequels Finding Dory set the opening weekend record for an animated film at $135.1 million in 2016, while was then broken by The Incredibles 2 last year at $182.7 million. As the fourth film in the series, Toy Story 4 may not be as highly anticipated as a sequel fans waited for 14 years. Reviews are on par with the previous installments. Opening with the second widest theater count of 4575, Toy Story 4 may smash $175 million.
MGM reboots the R-rated horror Child’s Play [CHLDP]. Mark Hamill takes over as the voice of the killer doll named Chucky. The previous chapter Seed of Chucky opened in 2004 to $8.8 million. Playing in 3007 theaters, Child’s Play could unbox $16 million.
After a disappointing debut, Men In Black: International [MIB4] is likely to slide more than 55% in its second weekend to about $13 million.
Anna [ANNA1] targets male fans of director Luc Besson [LBESS] who don’t know or care about his sexual misconduct. Dumped into 2114 theaters by Summit, Anna could earn $3 million.
