Not even Disney and Pixar are immune to sequelitis as the latest chapter of their venerable franchise Toy Story 4 [TOYS4] opened with an estimated $118.0 million. Although the film topped Toy Story 3's $110.3 million from 2010, it failed to surpass studio expectation to beat Finding Dory's $135 million. Toy Story 4 appealed to an audience that was 52% female and 55% under 25.
Child's Play [CHLDP] debuted in second place with $14.1 million. The horror remake attracted a crowd of 52% male and 61% aged 25 or older.
Last weekend's top film Men In Black: International [MIB4] fell 64% in its second weekend to $10.8 million and fourth place. The sci-fi relaunch has booked $52.7 million.
The Secret Life of Pets [PETS2] finished fifth with $10.3 million, bringing its total to $117.6 million after 3 weekends.
Rocketman [RCKTM] wrapped up its fourth weekend at sixth with $5.6 million and $77.3 million overall.
Shaft [SHAF2] rounded out the top 10 at $3.6 million, down 60% from its opening.
Anna [ANNA1] grossed just $3.5 million to debut at 11. The actioner skewed 61% male and 88% over the age of 25.
