Another new sequel is set to do the June swoon at the box office, while Toy Story 4 [TOYS4] will easily retain the title. The Incredibles 2 dropped 56% in its second weekend last year while Toy Story 3 declined 46% in 2010. Toy Story 4 is likely to fall somewhere in between to around $61 million.
The second creepy doll movie to open in 5 days, Annabelle Comes Home [ANAB3] is the third installment in the horror series that was spun off from The Conjuring. Patrick Wilson [PWILS] and Vera Farmiga [VFARM] put in an appearance as the Warrens, but the R-rated sequel focuses on their daughter, played by McKenna Grace [MCGRA]. Both previous Annabelle films debuted above $35 million on a normal 3-day weekend. New Line opened Annabelle Comes Home on Wednesday, earning $7.2 million. Playing in 3613 theaters, Annabelle Comes Home is likely to make another $19.0 million over the weekend.
Universal targets Beatles fan with the musical comedy Yesterday [AUNIL] directed by Danny Boyle [DBOYL]. Reviews for the PG-13 rated film are trending positive, but not strong enough to be a must-see film. Booked in 2603 theaters, Yesterday could hit $11 million.
Facing direct competition, Child’s Play [CHLDP] is likely to lose 60% of its debut to $5.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
