Only two new films are brave enough to open between Spider-Man: Far From Home [SPID7] and The Lion King next week. Neither will put a dent in Spider-Man. Because Far From Home opened during the middle of the week, its Friday box office wasn’t inflated by Thursday previews. The sequel is likely to hold better than 50%, as shown by 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, which opened on a Wednesday and declined 44% in its second frame. Spider-Man: Far From Home could capture around $50 million.
Toy Story 4 [TOYS4] has proved to have strong leg for a fourth film and looks to rake in another $24 million for its fourth weekend.
Third place looks to be a toss-up between the two new releases. Paramount targets horror fans with the R-rated Crawl [CRAWL]. The alligator film could surprise much like the shark film 47 Meters Down. Stalking 3170 theaters, Crawl may bite off $13.5 million.
Fox pairs up Dave Bautista [DBAUT] and Kumail Nanjani [KNANJ] in the R-rated action comedy Stuber [STUBR]. The marketing has largely been effective in conveying a funny movie, though reviews have been poor. Stuber could hail $13 million from 3050 theaters.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
