Five new wide releases crowd the box office this weekend, with Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw [FAFHS] likely to stay ahead of pack. The action spin-off will likely lose 60% of its debut for a second weekend around $24 million.
The Lion King [LIONK] looks to wrap up its fourth weekend with about $22 million.
Among the new arrivals, Dora and the Lost City of Gold [DORAE] is most likely to break out. Isabela Moner [IMONE] stars as the teen version of the popular cartoon character Dora the Explorer. The PG-rated film should appeal to families as well as Hispanic moviegoers, both of which are difficult to track. Roaming 3735 theaters, Dora and the Lost City of Gold could swipe $21 million.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark [SSTID] targets teenage fans of the horror book series. Producer Guillermo Del Toro has led the promotional efforts on the PG-13 rated film. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark could gross $16 million from 3135 locations.
Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss and Tiffany Haddish team-up in The Kitchen [TKTCH]. Unfortunately, the R-rated crime drama has picked up terrible reviews that will keep most of their fans away. Opening in 2745 theater, The Kitchen may cook up $10 million.
Kevin Costner voices a dog in The Art of Racing in the Rain [ARTIR] based on a popular novel. The PG-rated film comes at the tail end of a string of dog movies, while facing competition from other family-friendly fares. The Art of Racing in the Rain may fetch $9 million from 2765 theaters.
Expanding to 704 theaters in its fourth weekend, The Farewell [TFRWL] should be able to reach $2.5 million.
Aldis Hodge stars in the inspirational life story of Brian Banks [BBANK]. Bleecker Street has not had much success marketing its films lately. Playing in just 1240 theaters, Brian Banks could tackle $2.0 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
