Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark [SSTID] opened above expectations with $20.8 million. The horror film attracted an audience that was 57% female and 54% aged 25 or older.
The Lion King [LIONK] finished third at $20.0 million, bringing its total to $473.1 million.
Dora & The Lost City of Gold [DORAE] earned $17.0 million to debut at the fourth spot. The crowd was 57% female and 54% aged 25 or older.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood [MFMLY] was fifth with $11.6 million, totaling $100.3 million.
The Art of Racing in the Rain [ARITR] opened at sixth with $8.1 million. The film skewed 62% female and 59% oover the age of 25.
The Kitchen [TKTCH] was a disaster at just $5.5 million for seventh place. The audience was 51% female and 89% over the age of 25.
Expanding wide to 709 theaters, The Farewell [TFRWL] gathered $2.2 million to finish tenth.
Brian Banks [BBANK] debuted eleventh overall with $2.1 million.
