Another flock of new wide releases crowds the multiplex this weekend with The Angry Birds Movie 2 [ANGR2] likely to lead the way. The first Angry Birds Movie opened May 2016 with $38.2 million, which necessitated this needless sequel. Although reviews are better than the original, many patrons of the first are unlikely to return. Sony moved the opening up to Tuesday at the last minute, and banked $4.3 million over the last 2 days. Landing in 3869 theaters, The Angry Birds Movie 2 could place first with $15 million over the weekend.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw [FAFHS] looks to punch out another $13 million for its third weekend.
The R-rated raunchy comedy Good Boys [GBOYS] targets young males, many whom are probably too young to see the film without an adult. Universal has built up buzz with redband trailers and premiere at SXSW. Playing in 3204 theaters, Good Boys may earn $12 million.
Entertainment Studios produced 47 Meters Down: Uncaged [48MDW], a sequel to their biggest film. The first 47 Meters Down opened with a surprising $11.2 million in June of 2017 and legged out $44.3 million. The PG-13 rated sequel dips into more crowded waters with a different cast. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged may swallow $10 million from 2850 locations.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark [SSTID] is likely to drop more than 50% in its second weekend to about $9.5 million. Fellow sophomore film Dora and the Lost City of Gold [DORAE] is likely to hold better than 50% with $9 million.
Blinded by the Light [BLBTL] has the best reviews amongst the weekend’s new releases. Warner Bros. acquired the buzzy British film out of Sundance, and gave the PG-13 rated drama a wide release. Despite a starless cast, the feel-good story should connect with discerning audiences. Tuning in 2307 theaters, Blinded by the Light could sing out $5.5 million.
Cate Blanchett toplines Where’d You Go, Bernadette [WDYGB] directed by Richard Linklater. Annapurna has delayed the release several times due to lack of funds and/or quality. Where’d You Go, Bernadette may uncover $4.5 million from 2404 locations.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
