Lionsgate looks to have its second number one film of the year after John Wick with another threequel, Angel Has Fallen [HFAL3]. Gerard Butler returns as Secret Service agent extraordinaire who goes on the run after he is framed for an assassination attempt. While the first film Olympus Has Fallen opened $30.4 million in March 2013, the sequel London Has Fallen debuted $21.6 million 3 years later. The downward trend will continue due to franchise fatigue. Taking off in 3286 theaters, Angel Has Fallen may land $14 million.
Likely to be frontloaded by young males, Good Boys [GBOYS] could drop more than 50% from its debut to $10 million.
Sony targets Christians with Overcomer [OVRCM] from the Kendrick brothers. Their last film War Room opened to $11.4 million during August 2015. Advance ticket sales are pacing ahead of Breakthrough, which opened at $11.2 million earlier this year. Playing in 1723 theaters, Overcomer could collect $8 million.
Samara Weaving stars in the R-rated thriller Ready or Not [RONOT] about a deadly game of hide and seek. The Fox Searchlight release has earned excellent reviews. Ready or Not grossed $2 million opening on Wednesday, and looks to capture another $6 million over the weekend from 2840 locations.
The Angry Birds Movie 2 [ANGR2] flopped hard despite great reviews. As a midweek opener, the animated sequel will likely hold better than 50% in its second weekend for another $5.5 million.
Expanding wide to 991 theaters after two weeks of limited release, The Peanut Butter Falcon [PBFAL] could pin down $2.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
