In the weekend box office battle for 1980s nostalgia, The Karate Kid [KFKID] thoroughly trounced The A-Team [ATEAM] to prevail in first place. Jaden Smith [JSMIT] and Jackie Chan [JCHAN] kicked their way to a strong $56.0 million debut, nearly double pre-release expectations. Family moviegoers made up 45% of the audience with 56% under the age of 25. With excellent word of mouth, The Karate Kid is due for an extended stay at the box office.
The A-Team finished a distant second with an estimated $26.0 million. The featured adaptation of the TV series attracted an older male crowd at 59% guys and 61% aged 25 or above. With average reviews, the actioner is likely to prove to be front-loaded.
Stepping down after three weeks at the top, Shrek Forever After [SHRK4] gathered another $15.8 million to bring its 4-weekend total to $210 million.
Get Him to the Greek [GHGRK] arrived in fourth place with $10.1 million, a decline of 43% from its debut. Killers [5KILR] followed at the fifth spot with $8.2 million, dropping 48% from its opening weekend.
