Hollywood studios have traditionally avoided the slow Labor Day holiday weekend, and this year is no exception. Angel Has Fallen [HFAL3] should easily remain the box office champ with around $14 million over the four-day weekend. Also likely to hold their positions from last week are Good Boys [GBOYS] in second place with about $8 million, and Overcomer [OVRCM] at the third spot with $5 million.
David Oyelowo leads Don’t Let Go [ONLYU] produced by Blumhouse. Universal passed on releasing the R-rated thriller, which has gone through a couple of title changes, a sign of marketing challenges. Opening in just 922 theaters, Don’t Let Go may capture $4 million over the long weekend.
Targeted at the Indian diaspora, Saaho [SAAHO] could be the break out opener this weekend. The lead actor Prabhas previously starred in 2015’s Baahubali and its 2017 sequel, which opened in the U.S. to $3.6 million and $10.4 million respectively. They are also the fourth and second top grossing Indian films ever. Saaho could chart with $3 million.
The romantic comedy Tod@s Caen [TCAEN] courts Hispanic moviegoers. Pantelion opened Ya Veremos to $2.2 million this weekend last year, while Hazlo Como Hombre debuted with $1.4 million two years ago. Tod@s Caen should be good for at least $1.5 million from 370 theaters.
Blue Fox opens Killerman [KILRM] in 320 theaters. Star Liam Hemsworth has been in the press, unfortunately more for his divorce from Miley Cyrus. Killerman may not hit $1 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
