Two new films arrive in theaters this weekend after first premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. However, neither is likely to dethrone It: Chapter Two [IT2]. The first It declined 51% in its second weekend. As a longer sequel, It: Chapter Two looks to drop more than 55% to about $40 million.
STX could have a breakout hit with Hustlers [HSTLR], which premiered in Toronto to rapturous response and award buzz, especially for star Jennifer Lopez. The R-rated drama about strippers stealing from their clients appears to have wide appeal. Women are attracted to the story of female empowerment, while men are interested in strip clubs, period. Twirling in 3520 theaters, Hustlers could pocket $30 million.
Warner Bros. also debuted The Goldfinch [GLDFN] at TIFF, though to a lackluster reaction. Based on an acclaimed novel, the R-rated drama is unlikely to draw from outside the literary fanbase. The Goldfinch may fetch $7.0 million from 2542 locations.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
