The last weekend of September brings only one new wide opener. Sony courts the family demographic with the animated Abominable [EVERS], the third Yeti film after Smallfoot opened to $23.0 million a year ago and Missing Link bombed with $5.9 million in April. On the other hand, the PG-rated film has earned positive reviews and has the target audience all to itself. Scaling 4242 theaters, Abominable [EVERS] could track down $22 million.
Despite their older age, the Downton Abbey [DWTAB] fanbase did rush out opening weekend. Weekday numbers remain strong for the TV adaptation. Downton Abbey will likely hold better than 50% at $16 million.
With only a B- CinemaScore, Ad Astra [ASTRA] is likely to tumble 55% in its second weekend to $8.5 million. Rambo: Last Blood [RAMB5] will probably fare worse and lose 60% to around $7.5 million.
Roadside Attraction is giving the biopic Judy [JUDY] a moderate size opening in 461 theaters. Renee Zellweger has earned Oscar buzz for her performance, but the PG-13 rated film faces competition from Downton Abbey. Judy may be able to hit $2.5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
