A tepid weekend at the box office had a surprise winner as Midway [MDWAY] pulled off an upset victory with an estimated $17.5 million. The WWII actioner skewed older men as expected with 60% male and 87% aged 25 and older.
Doctor Sleep [DRSLP] woke up just $14.1 million to open in second place. 39 years turned out to be too long for a sequel to The Shining. The audience was 57% male and 74% aged 25 or older.
Playing With Fire [PLWFR] debuted at the third spot with a better than expected $12.8 million. Families made up 61% of the audience.
Last Christmas [LASTC] underperformed with a $11.6 million debut in fourth place. The romance attracted a crowd that was 65% female and 65% aged 25 or older.
The previous champion, Terminator: Dark Fate [TERM6] fell 63% in its second weekend to $10.8 million and fifth overall. The sequel has grossed $48.5 million.
Meanwhile, Harriett [HARET] held 62% of its opening and took eighth with $7.2 million. The biopic has banked $23.5 million.
Expanding to 802 theaters in its fourth weekend, Jojo Rabbit [JOJOR] finished eleventh at $3.9 million, bringing its total to $9.1 million.
