The cold start to the November box office looks to linger for another weekend. While Ford v Ferrari [FOVFE] boasts stars Matt Damon and Christian Bale, the PG-13 rated film is a period drama rather than some high-concept actioner. Directed by James Mangold, Ford v Ferrari is shaping up to be a major awards contender. The Fox release has excellent reviews and buzz from the festival circuit, which will entice adult moviegoers. Starting up in 3528 theaters, Ford v Ferrari looks to cross the finish line in first place with $26 million.
Sony reboots Charlie’s Angels [CHAR3] with a new cast led by Kristen Stewart. Director Elizabeth Banks has given the new PG-13 rated film a feminine gaze, which may alienate the male audience that made the first two films successful. Will targeting young women and the gay community compensate? Trackings don’t indicate so. Charlie’s Angels may dial up $16 million from 3452 locations.
After its better than expected debut, Midway [MDWAY] should continue to pull in the older audience. The actioner could tail off less than 50% in its second weekend to $9 million.
The family-friendly Playing with Fire [PLWFR] will likely hold around 55% of its opening and put out around $7.0 million.
With mixed reviews, the romantic comedy Last Christmas [LASTC] could hold slightly better than 50% for a $6 million sophomore frame.
The horror sequel Doctor Sleep [DRSLP] is likely to tumble 60% from its debut to $5.5 million.
Warner Bros. targets the senior crowd with The Good Liar [GLIAR] starring Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen. However, the R-rated drama has only received average reviews. Playing in 2439 theaters, The Good Liar could take in $5 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
