Hollywood calls upon Disney once again to snap the cold front at the box office with the animated sequel Frozen 2 [FROZ2]. Six years ago, Frozen took the country by storm propelled by the massive hit song “Let It Go”. Girls of all ages wanted to be Elsa. Frozen took in $93.6 million during its 5-day Thanksgiving opening weekend and legged out $400.7 million. The PG-rated sequel finds the gang searching for answers to the source of Elsa’s power as well as her parents’ disappearance. Advance ticket sales are outpacing all previous animated films including The Incredibles 2, which holds the animated record opening at $182.7 million, and Toy Story 4, which opened this June to $120.9 million. Both those films opened during the summer, while the record for an animated film in November is just $70.5 million set in 2004 by The Incredibles. Chilling 4440 theaters, Frozen 2 could accumulate $126 million.
Ford v Ferrari [FOVFE] is a winner with both critics and audiences. With excellent word of mouth, Ford v Ferrari should be able to hold 65% of its opening for another $20 million.
Tom Hanks plays Mr. Rogers in the biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood [YAMFR]. The PG-rated drama has excellent reviews and looks to be an awards contender. However, the Sony release will likely only appeal to older adults, a demographic that doesn’t rush out opening weekend. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood could pull in $17 million from 3235 locations.
Chadwick Boseman toplines the R-rated actioner 21 Bridges [17BRD]. STX has delayed the release a couple of times due to their financial problems. Does the Black Panther actor have enough drawing power to bring out moviegoers? Showing in 2665 theaters, 21 Bridges may cross $11 million.
Moviegoers didn’t care for the reboot of Charlie’s Angels [CHAR3], which is likely to tumble 55% in its sophomore weekend to $4 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
