Despite claiming the third highest opening ever for December with an estimated $175.5 million, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker [STAR9] lagged behind the two previous episodes, The Last Jedi's $220 million and The Force Awakens' record $248 million. The finale atttracted an audience that was 59% male and 64% aged 25 or older.
Jumanji: The Next Level [JUMN2] was dethroned to second place with $26.1 million. The fantasy sequel dropped 56% in its second weekend to advance its total to $101.9 million.
Frozen [FROZ2.BW] remained in the top three at $12.3 million and $386.5 million overall.
Cats [CATS] debuted at the fourth spot with $6.5 million. The audience gave the musical a C+ CinemaScore.
Knives Out [KNIVS] sliced another $6.1 million to round out the top five. The mystery has earned $89.6 million after 4 weekends.
Expanding to 1480 theaters, Bombshell [FAIRB] took sixth with $5.1 million. The audience skewed 62% female and 87% over the age of 25.
Richard Jewell [RJEWE] finished seventh with $2.6 million, down 45% from its debut. The drama stands at $9.5 million.
Black Christmas [BCHRS] tumbled 58% in its second weekend to $1.8 million and a cumulative of $7.2 million.
