After winning the Golden Globes for Best Picture Drama and Best Director, 1917 [1917] is poised to conquer this weekend’s box office. The World War I film is shown as one continuous take, which Universal has marketed as a must see on the big screen. The R-rated 1917 has already booked $2.5 million during two weeks of limited release. Fandango presales are outpacing Ford v Ferrari, which opened at $31.5 million. Expanding to 3434 theaters, 1917 could top $33 million.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker [STAR9] continues to decay at a faster clip than its predecessors. The final episode hopes to clear $18 million in its fourth weekend and stay ahead of Jumanji: The Next Level [JUMN2], which could score another $17 million.
Paramount targets women with the R-rated comedy Like A Boss [LMTDP] starring Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne. Terrible reviews will prevent the film from breaking out. Showing in 3078 theaters, Like A Boss could generate $12 million.
Warner Bros. expands Just Mercy [JMRCY] wide after grossing less than half a million during two weeks of limited release. The PG-13 rated drama has garnered critical acclaim, but less award buzz than 1917. Just Mercy may tally $11 million from 2375 locations.
Underwater [UNDWT] is one of the leftover Fox film from before Disney's acquisition. The PG-13 rated sci-fi thriller has little buzz and poor reviews. Charlie’s Angels showed Kristen Stewart is not a box office draw. Diving in 2791 theaters, Underwater could sink with $7 million.
With a CinemaScore of F, The Grudge [GRUD4] is likely to tumble 65% in its second weekend to $4 million.
That’s the whisper on the virtual trading floor.
