With perfect timing of its wide expansion days after its Golden Globes win, 1917 [1917] overtook the weekend box office with an estimated $36.5 million. Audience for the World War I actioner skewed 60% male and 80% aged 25 or older.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker [STAR9] was knocked down to second at $15.1 million, bringing its total to $478.2 million.
Jumanji: The Next Level [JUMN2.BW] finished third with $14.0 million and $257.1 million overall.
Like a Boss [LMTDP] and Just Mercy [JMRCY] are currently tied for fourth at $10.0 million. Like a Boss attracted an audience that was 56% female and 65% aged 25 or older. Meanwhile, Just Mercy appealed to an older crowd that was 85% aged 25 or older and 60% female.
Little Women [LTLWM] took in $7.7 million for the sixth spot. The literary adaptation has booked $74.0 million.
Underwater [UNDWT] opened in seventh place with just $7.0 million. The 50% male and 64% aged 25 or older audience gave the film a "C" CinemaScore.
Rounding out the top 12, The Grudge [GRUD4] tumbled 69% in its second weekend to $3.5 million.
