With an estimated $40.0 million opening at the weekend box office, Onward [ONWRD] ranks as the lowest non-holiday debut since Pixar's early days. The audience was 52% female and 51% aged under 25.
Last weekend's champ, Invisible Man [INVSB] finished second at $15.2 million. The thriller declined just 46% in its second weekend to bring its total to $52.7 million.
The Way Back [HASBN] debuted at the third spot with $8.5 million. The drama skewed heavily older males.
Sonic the Hedgehog [SONIC] took fourth place with $8.0 million to advance its total to $140.8 million.
The Call of the Wild [TCOTW] rounded out the top five with $7.0 million and $57.5 million after three weekends.
Moving up to the sixth spot, Emma [EMMA] secured $5.0 million in its wide expansion. The period romance has booked $6.9 million.
