Hello HSX Community!
Hope you found some things that were worth watching during the first half of August. Here’s my picks for the back half.
RECENT MOVIES THAT HAVE JUST COME OUT I DON'T WANT YOU TO MISS
-
DEEP BLUE SEA 3 - This was kinda fun and certainly scratched my sharksploitation itch. If you don’t want to spend $30 on MULAN, you can spend $15 on this and trust me, the kids will never love you more.
-
LA LLORONA - New to Shudder. You like your ghost stories as political allegories? This is a terrific South American thriller about the folklore legend coming to life to punish government officials involved in war crimes. Worth checking out Shudder to see this.
COMING TO VOD
-
SPREE - (8/14) THIS MOVIE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! It’s very confrontational but it's a pretty smart horror/satire about social messaging in the hands of a sociopath. Premiered at Sundance 2020 in their NEXT section which is used to highlight more edgier material and this certainly qualified.
-
YOU CANNOT KILL DAVID ARQUETTE - (8/28) Surprisingly earnest, this doc about actor/family black sheep David Arquette’s attempts to start a professional wrestling career. It's not a shock Arquette is a manchild. It is surprising he wants to be something more than that and the path forward is for wrestling to take him seriously. [YCKDA]
COMING SOON TO NETFLIX
-
COBRA KAI SEASON 1&2 -(8/28) Originally the crown jewel of YouTube’s original programming but they’ve shifted gears and licensed the series to Netflix. Season 3 is coming soon, but I can’t recommend the first two seasons enough. Yes, it's cheesy. Yes, it wears its heart on its sleeve. Yes, you probably should like the original to fully get into this sequel series. But the bottom line for me is that COBRA KAI is just great storytelling. That’s right, they can study this and CHINATOWN in film school. Ok, maybe that's a little hyperbolic, but it does succeed because it, like all great sequels, manages to balance the nostalgia from the original and become something entirely separate on its own. I love it.
THINGS I HAVEN’T SEEN BUT LOOKING FORWARD TO
-
THE LEGEND OF KORRA (8/14, Netflix) AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER was one of the best things I’ve watched during the pandemic so I am eager to dive into the sequel series.
-
LOVECRAFT COUNTRY - (8/16, HBO) Jordan Peele + JJ Abrams. Thats a lotta talent in the EP pool, so I have high expectations for this adaptation of the Matt Ruff novel.
