The New Year brings hope for the theatrical box office business. However, the remnants of 2020 still carry over to the first weekend of 2021 as over 60% of theaters remained closed with no new releases. Wonder Woman 1984 [WOND2] will dominate again, but the word of mouth is decisively mixed. While some loved the sequel, others hated it. Wonder Woman 1984 could hold better than 50% over the holiday weekend for another $9 million.
Despite its pedigree, News of the World [NEWSW] didn’t appeal to much of an audience. The adult-targeted western may hold two-thirds of its opening for a second weekend at $1.5 million.
Monster Hunter [MONHT] looks to bag $0.6 million during its third weekend and cross the $5 million mark.
Promising Young Woman [PRMYM] should hold at least 50% of its debut at around $0.4 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
