With the Super Bowl behind us, Warner Bros. is back with another new theatrical release Judas and the Black Messiah [JWMHB], which will also debut simultaneously on HBO Max over the Presidents' Day holiday weekend. Daniel Kaluuya stars as real-life Black Panther activist Fred Hampton and Lakeith Stanfield as an FBI informant. The R-rated biopic has received award buzz and critical acclaim with a RottenTomatoes score currently at 97%. With a theater count expected to be around 2000, Judas and the Black Messiah may be able to gather $3.5 million over the 4-day weekend.
The Little Things [LTHNG] looks to cross the $10 million mark with about $1.5 million during its third frame.
Robin Wright makes her directorial debut and stars in the drama Land [LAND]. Although timed for the award season, the R-rated Focus release has not received any year-end nominations from critics or guilds. The mixed reviews are unlikely to bring out the older female target audience. Playing in1231 theaters, Land could stake out $1.0 million over the long weekend.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
