Disney's day-n-date strategy ended up supressing the opening weekend of Raya and the Last Dragon [RAYAD] at an estimated $8.6 million, but still enough to top the chart. Many theater chains refused the book the animated film, which was also available on Disney+, without more generous terms similar to Tom & Jerry. The audience turnout was 57% female and 52% over the age of 25.
Last weekend’s champ, Tom & Jerry [TMJRY] finished second at $6.1 million. The family film declined 53% in its second weekend to bring its total to nearly $23 million.
Chaos Walking [CHAOW] bombed with just a third place opening of $3.8 million. Targeted at Young Adults, the sci-fi film skewed 54% males and 58% over 25.
Debuting in 1252 theaters, Boogie [BOOGE] dished out $1.2 million. The basketball drama drew a diverse crowd that was 53% male.
