As we hit the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic declaration, the movie business is finally reemerging from its extended hibernation. With no new competition this weekend, Raya and the Last Dragon [RAYAD] could hold 60% of its opening for a $5.0 million second weekend.
Tom & Jerry [TMJRY] looks to stay in second place with about $3.5 million during its third outing.
Chaos Walking [CHAOW] is likely to drop nearly 50% in its second weekend to $2.0 million.
Sony Pictures Classics expands The Father [TFTHR] wide to over 750 theaters after two weeks of limited releases without reporting any box office. The drama was nominated for four Golden Globes but came up empty-handed. With excellent reviews, The Father could earn $500K.
Sony dumps another one of its acquisitions, Long Weekend [LNWKN]. The R-rated romantic comedy was scheduled just 3 weeks ago and released its trailer just 2 weeks ago. Previously, Yellow Rose and The Kid Detective both opened less than $150K. Long Weekend will likely draw in a similar $150K from 814 theaters.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
