As the first day of Spring arrive on Saturday, movie theaters in the populous Southern Californian counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino have reopened at 25% capacity. That should provide a nice cushion for the holdover films, led by Raya and the Last Dragon [RAYAD] with a third weekend at around $4.0 million.
Tom & Jerry [TMJRY] looks to remain in second place with about $2.5 million in its fourth weekend, while Chaos Walking [CHAOW] should follow at $1.5 million for its third outing.
Roadside Attractions opens The Courier [IRNBK], the weekend’s only new wide release, in 1443 theaters. Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the Cold War spy thriller, which has earned positive reviews. Targeted at older adults, The Courier could deliver $1.3 million.
With 6 Oscar nominations, The Father [TFTHR] could hold 90% of its first weekend of wide release and tally $400K.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
