The death of the domestic box office was greatly exaggerated. Even with theaters operating at less than full capacity and direct competition from its availability on streaming, Godzilla vs. Kong [GOVKO] roared to an estimated $32.2 million over the weekend and $48.5 million since opening on Wednesday. The monster flick brought out an ethnically diverse crowd that skewed younger male.
The Unholy [SHRNE] opened at the second spot with $3.2 million. The horror film attracted an audience that was 53% over the age of 25 and evenly split between the sexes.
Last week’s champion, Nobody was close behind in third place with $3.1 million, down 55% in its sophomore session. The actioner has punched out $11.9 million.
Expanding to 483 theaters, French Exit [FREXT] took in just $193K to bring its total to $200K.
