The Memorial Day holiday weekend brings two big movies back on the big screen. A Quiet Place Part II [AQPL2] finally opens after being delayed for more than a year due to the pandemic. The PG-13 rated horror sequel is the type of movie best experienced in a cinema. The original A Quiet Place broke out with a $50.2 million debut in April 2018. Anticipation is high for the sequel and reviews have been excellent. Showing in 3726 theaters, A Quiet Place Part II should top the box office with about $35 million over the first 3 days and $42 million over the 4-day weekend.
Cruella [CRULA] stars Emma Stone in the origin story of the villain from 101 Dalmatians. Disney is opening the PG-13 rated film in theaters on the same day it’s available on Disney+ for $29.99. As a result, the box office will be depressed as some families choose to stream at home. Playing in 3892 theaters, Cruella could round up $20 million Friday to Sunday and $26 million through Monday.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw [SAW9] looks to drop to third with $3.0 million over the 4-day weekend.
Heading into its fourth weekend, Wrath of Man [VGLNC] could tally $2.0 million over the long holiday weekend.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
