Father’s Day weekend brings an R-rated action comedy sequel for the testosterone crowd. Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard [HTMB2] reunites Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek from The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which opened August 2017 at $21.4 million and closed out with $75.5 million. While audiences made the film a solid hit, they didn’t necessarily clamor for a sequel. Lionsgate opened the sequel on Wednesday and grossed $3.9 million. However, $1.8 million of that amount came from sneak previews over the previous weekend. The film has received poor reviews from critics, and word of mouth is unlikely to be good. Targeting 3330 theaters, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard may hit $10 million Friday to Sunday.
A Quiet Place Part II [AQPL2] has been holding up exceptionally well. The sequel could bring home another $9.0 million during its fourth outing.
Three films will compete in a close race for third place. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway [PRAB2] may be able to hold 65% of its debut for a second frame at $6.5 million. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It [CNJU3] should do a similar number for its third weekend.
In the Heights [INHTS] did not appeal to a broad audience. The musical will likely fall 45% to about $6.3 million.
Sony Picture Classics expands 12 Mighty Orphans [12MOR] wide to 1000 theaters after scoring $251K in 132 theaters mostly in Texas last weekend. The football drama could appeal to fathers and sons, and break $1 million.
Opening in 534 theaters, the documentary The Spark Brothers [SPBRO] may rake in $500K.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
