Marvel returns to theaters for the first time in two years with the long-delayed Black Widow [BWDOW]. The superhero film kicks off phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though the story is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Scarlett Johansson returns in the title role to pass the baton to Florence Pugh. Disney decided to release Black Widow simultaneously on Disney+ for $29.99. However, Black Widow should still score the biggest opening of the pandemic era as advance ticket sales are outpacing F9: The Fast Saga, which debuted at $70 million. The buzz is strong enough to bring out the faithful fanbase. Descending upon 4160 theaters, Black Widow could bite off $80 million.
After leading for two weeks, F9: The Fast Saga [FAST9] will finish in second with around $12 million.
The Boss Baby: Family Business [BOSS2] may hold 55% of its opening weekend for another $9 million.
The Forever Purge [PURG5] is likely to drop nearly 50% in its second frame to $6.5 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
