Paramount reboots its toy-based action adventure series with Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins [GIJO3] centered on the title character before he became the silent commando. Henry Golding stars as a loner who is brought into a secret Japanese clan to learn the ways of the ninja warrior. Snake Eyes has earned mixed reviews with hardcore fans being the harshest critics. The previous film G.I. Joe: Retaliation starring Dwayne Johnson opened at $40.5 million in 2013. With less starpower and more character development, Snake Eyes will have to settle for less. Rolling into 3521 theaters, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins may hit $22 million.
Nostalgia powered Space Jam 2 [SJAM2] to a better than expected opening. The family film should be able to hold 55% in its second outing with $17 million.
Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is back with another thriller Old [OLD] about a beach that rapidly ages its visitors. With a lack of starpower, the PG-13 rated film must rely on its high concept as well as Shyamalan’s name brand. His last two releases Glass and Split both opened above $40 million during pre-pandemic times. However, Old has little buzz and middling reviews. Arriving in 3355 theaters, Old may accumulate $16 million.
The decay of Black Widow [BWDOW] should level off during its third weekend at around $14 million.
Escape Room 2: Tournament of Champions [ESCR2] is likely to lose more than 50% of its debut to settle with about $4 million.
Mark Wahlberg toplines the drama Joe Bell [GJBEL], which Roadside Attractions rescued from Solstice Studios. Joe Bell may walk away with $2.0 million from 1093 locations.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
