Four new wide releases open in theaters this weekend, but none is likely to topple Free Guy [FREEG] from the Leaderboard. A 50% second weekend drop-off for the videogame movie would put Free Guy at $14 million, which should be enough for first place.
PAW Patrol: The Movie [PAWPT] is the feature debut of the popular animated series target at preschoolers. With COVID cases on the rise, some parents are hesitant to attend theaters. Paramount is also releasing the G-rated film simultaneously on its streaming network, which will cannibalize business. Rolling in 2771 3184 theaters, PAW Patrol: The Movie may sit with $9 $11 million. (updated: 8/20)
Hugh Jackman toplines the sci-fi film Reminiscence [REMNS], the latest release from Warner Bros. that’s also available on HBO Max. The PG-13 rated film has received poor reviews, which will keep the older target audience at home. Reminiscence could collect $7.0 million from 3250 locations.
Jungle Cruise [JUNGC] is poised to cross $90 million in its fourth weekend with about $6 million.
The Protégé [ANA] starring Maggie Q is the latest entry in the female assassin subgenre. The R-rated actioner is playing exclusively in theaters, but has no advance reviews from critics. Arriving in 2577 theaters, The Protégé could hit $5 million.
The older female targeted Respect [RESPC] could hold 55% of its opening for another $4.8 million. On the other hand, the younger male targeted Don’t Breathe 2 [DNBR2] may drop 55% in its second weekend to $4.7 million.
Searchlight’s horror film The Night House [TNTHS] is debuting exclusively in theaters. The R-rated haunted house movie has earned excellent reviews. Showing in 2240 theaters, The Night House may admit $4.5 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
