As schools reopen across the country, only one film will debut wide in theaters this weekend. Universal releases MGM's long-delayed Candyman [CNDYM], a sequel to the 1992 horror film with the same title. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars as an artist in Chicago who uncovers the urban legend and summons the killer with a hook and bees. Co-written and co-produced by Jordan Peele, the R-rated film has earned excellent reviews. Playing exclusively in theaters, Candyman should connect with its young male target audience that’s less concerned about COVID. Candyman may attract $18.5 million from 3569 locations.
Free Guy [FREEG] held up better than expected in its second weekend. With strong word of mouth, Free Guy could clear $12 million in its third session.
Families should help PAW Patrol: The Movie [PAWPT] hold 65% of its opening for a second weekend around $8.5 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
