Two new wide releases enter the box office arena, but they will be no competition for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The Marvel superhero looks to lead for a third weekend at around $18 million.
91-year-old Clint Eastwood is back directing himself in the modern western Cry Macho [CRYMC]. The PG-13 rated film opens simultaneously in 3800 theaters and on HBO Max, which will siphon away his senior fanbase. Reviews are worse than 2018’s The Mule, which debuted with $17.5 million. Cry Macho may settle with $5.5 million.
Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo faceoff in the R-rated actioner Copshop [COPSH]. Distributor Open Road’s last release, The Marksman, debuted in 1975 theaters over the 4-day MLK Jr. holiday weekend with just $3.5 million. Copshop is getting better reviews and more theaters at 3005. Copshop could lock up $4.5 million.
With poor word of mouth due to its twist ending, Malignant [SLVCP] is poised to drop more than 55% to $2.5 million during its second weekend.
Two other films will open in moderate release. The Eyes of Tammy Faye [TEOTF] gets 450 theaters, while Blue Bayou [BLUBU] books 477 theaters.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
