The first weekend of October brings three new wide releases led by Venom: Let There Be Carnage [VENM2], the only one with theater exclusivity. Tom Hardy is back as the popular antihero from Marvel Comics to face his nemesis Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson. The first Venom opened three years ago at $80.3 million despite poor reviews. The sequel, rated PG-13 as was the first, has earned much more positive reviews, but will casual moviegoers return? Sony has juggled the release date, but seems to have found a sweet landing spot 3 weeks removed from the last major release. Serving 4225 theaters, Venom: Let There Be Carnage could consume $63 million.
After The Addams Family opened to $30.3 million two years ago, there was no doubt MGM would produce a sequel The Addams Family 2 [ADAM2]. However, films targeted at families have suffered at the box office due to the ongoing pandemic, so the PG-rated sequel will also be available on VOD day-date. The Addams Family 2 could earn $12.5 million from 4207 locations.
The Many Saints of Newark [TMSON] is a prequel to the hit HBO series “The Sopranos”. Michael Gandolfini stars in the role played by his late father, but the lead belongs to Alessandro Nivola. The R-rated drama is also available on HBO Max. The series’ older male fans are likely to stay home and catch it on TV, rather than to venture out to the 3000+ theaters. The Many Saints of Newark may take down just $8 million.
After four weeks at the top, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings [SHCHI] will likely dropped to fourth with around $7 million and cross $200 million.
With a musical fanbase, Dear Evan Hansen [DEHAN] could hold better than 50% in its sophomore session at around $4.0 million.
Neon is opening the French film Titane [TITNE], which won the Palm d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival, in 562 theaters. Titane could ride strong reviews and buzz to $1 million.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
