After a strong start at the international box office, the sci-fi remake of Dune [DUNE] finally arrives at the domestic market. Unfortunately, the epic directed by Denis Villeneuve will be released simultaneously on HBO Max. Warner Bros.’ biggest day-n-date opening thus far is Godzilla vs. Kong at $32.2 million. Dune should surpass that based on robust presales. Marketing has emphasized the spectacle of Dune on Premium Large Format screens. However, the PG-13 rated film has received mixed reviews for its story. Dune is likely to be front-loaded by the male fanbase. Mining 4100 theaters, Dune could earn $41 million.
Halloween Kills [HALW4] will drop off rapidly like most horror sequels. 2018’s Halloween tumbled 59% in its sophomore session. Halloween Kills is likely to fall steeper than 60% to $19 million.
No Time to Die [JB25] should decline another 50% in its third outing to $12 million.
Disney counters with the animated Ron’s Gone Wrong [RONGW], a leftover from its acquistion of Fox. The PG-rated story of a boy and his haywire robot has drawn comparisons to Big Hero Six and The Mitchells vs. The Machines. Without much buzz, Ron’s Gone Wrong may collect $9 million from 3650 locations.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage [VENM2] looks to consume another $8.5 million in its fourth weekend.
That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
