After all the hype and debate over its hybrid release strategy, the sci-fi epic Dune [DUNE] met expectations with an estimated $40.1 million to lead the weekend box office. The debut is the biggest for an HBO Max day-n-date title from Warner Bros., at the cost of diminished box office. 50% of the revenue came from large format, premium sound and/or 3D screens. The audience turnout skewed 61% males and 72% over the age of 25.
Halloween Kills [HALW4] fell a ghastly 71% in its second weekend to $14.5 million and second place. The horror sequel has grossed $73.1 million.
No Time to Die [JB25] finished third with $11.9 million and $120.0 million after three weekends.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage [VENM2] devoured another $9.1 million to bring its total to $181.8 million after four weekends.
Ron’s Gone Wrong [RONGW] debuted in fifth place with $7.3 million. The animated film earned an A CinemaScore.
The Last Duel [LDUEL] dropped 56% in its second round to $2.1 million for a running total of $8.25 million.
Opening in just 52 theaters, The French Dispatch [TFRDS] banked $1.3 million with an excellent per theater average of $25K.
