January is traditionally a slow month at the box office. The resurgence of COVID this winter will help keep 2022 that way. Spider-Man: No Way Home [SPID8] will easily maintain the top spot for a fourth weekend with about $28 million.
The family-friendly Sing 2 [SING2] is holding well, though not at the exceptional level of Sing. The animated film could bring in around $12 million in its third round.
The 355 [355] finally opens as the weekend’s only new wide release. The female-led spy actioner has been long-delayed and poor reviews explain why. The Protégé opened in August with $2.9 million. Universal’s marketing should be able to pull in more for The 355. Playing in 3145 theaters, The 355 may score $5.5 million.
The fourth spot looks to be a close race between The King’s Man [KTSS3] and American Underdog [AUKWS], each targeting another $2.5 million.
That's the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
