The 94th Academy Awards is over, but not without some controversies this year. 8 categories were taped before the live show, yet this year’s ceremony still ran longer than last year’s completely live presentation. The U.S. broadcast froze at one point as an altercation between Chris Rock and Will Smith was edited and muted out. In the end, Dune won the most Oscars with six, but all in the crafts categories. AwardOptions were offered for the top eight Oscar categories and HSX traders collectively predicted a perfect 8 for 8!
Best Picture went to CODA [A2PCOD], the first film premiering at Sundance to go all the way. Apple bought the independent film for $25 million and became the first streamer to take home an Oscar in this prestigious category, beating out Neflix and its latest attempt The Power of the Dog.
An early frontrunner in multiple major categories, The Power of the Dog took home just one Oscar for Best Director Jane Campion [A2DJCA].
Will Smith [A2AWSM] won the Oscar for Best Actor in King Richard, but not before making a scene with Chris Rock after the comedian joked about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Jessica Chastain [A2CJCH] scored the Oscar for Best Actress in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
Troy Kotsur [A2RTKO] took the Oscar for Supporting Actor in CODA, becoming the first dead man to do so.
Ariana DeBose [A2SADE] collected the Oscar for Supporting Actress in West Side Story, making history as the first openly queer woman of color to win.
The Oscar for Adapted Screenplay went to CODA’s Sian Heder [A2ECOD], who also directed the drama.
The Oscar for Original Screenplay was awarded to Belfast’s Kenneth Branagh [A2OBEL] who directed the film as well.
