As the only new wide release opening this weekend, Resident Evil: Afterlife [RESE4] easily topped the box office with an estimated $27.7 million. The addition of 3D helped the fourth film score the best opening in the zombie horror franchise yet. Though as with previous installments, the legs on the male-targeted sequel will decay quickly.
Sony Screen Gems also held the second spot as Takers [TAKER] grabbed $6.1 million in its thrid weekend. The heist thriller has hauled an impressive $48.1 million.
Last weekend's upset winner The American [THEAM] stumbled 55% to $5.9 million for the third spot. Total stands at $28.3 million.
Machete [MCHTE] took an even bigger fall as it dropped 63% to $4.2 million in its second weekend. Going the Distance [GDIST] followed behind with $3.8 million, a 44% decline from its opening weekend.
