Box Score: Avatar: The Way of the Water underperforms expectations

Blowing no one out of the water despite little competition, Avatar: The Way of the Water [AVAT2] led the weekend box office with an estimated $134.0 million. The highly anticipated sequel had been expected to double the original Avatar’s $77 million in 2009. 62% of the sales came from higher priced Premium Large Format screens. With an A CinemaScore, The Way of the Water should enjoy long legs during the holiday season.

After a five-week reign, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever [BPNT2.BW] was second at $5.4 million, pushing its to nearly $419.0 million.

Violent Night [VILNT] finished third with $5.0 million and nearly $35.0 million after 3 weekends.

Strange World [STRNW] took fourth with $2.2 million, bringing its fourth weekend total to $33.8 million.

The Menu [TMENU] rounded out the top five with $1.7 million for a current tally of $32.1 million.
