The box office never sleeps, but it took a nap this weekend as all the new releases struggled to meet pre-release expectations. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps [WALS2] rules first place with an estimated $19.0 million opening, a best for director Oliver Stone [OSTON]. The sequel primarily appealed to adults who remembered the seminal classic from 1987.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole [GHOOL] finished in second place with $16.3 million. Though directed by Zach Snyder [ZSNYD], the animated film failed to stood out in the glut of 3D releases.
Last weekend's top film The Town [TOWN] took the third spot with $16.0 million. The Ben Affleck [BAFFL] vehicle trailed off just 33% in its second weekend, which should further its awards prospects. Fellow sophmore pic Easy A [EASYA] declined 40% to $10.7 million for fourth overall.
Disney's You Again [UAGAN] debuted in fifth place with $8.3 million. Though targeted at women, the mother-daughter comedy may not even have legs at the box office.
Sony's The Virginity Hit [VRGNH] barely registered on the box office radar at just $0.3 million.
