Barbie [BARBI] blew away expectation for an estimated $155.0 million. The opening is the biggest of the year beating The Super Mario Bros Movie’s $146.6 million and the highest ever directed by a woman. The audience skewed 68% females, who graded Barbie an A CinemaScore.
Oppenheimer [OPHMR] detonated an equally impressive $80.5 million to debut in second place. It’s the biggest non-Batman opening for director Christopher Nolan. The biopic also received an A CinemaScore from its 64% male audience.
Sound of Freedom [SOFRD] finished third at $20.14 million, advancing its total to $124.75 million after 3 weekends.
Last weekend’s top film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning [MISS7] tumbled 64% in its second weekend to $19.5 million after losing all its IMAX screens. The sequel sits at $118.75 million.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny [INDI5] finished fifth at $6.7 million for a sum of $159.02 million after 4 weekends.
Insidious: The Red Door [NSID5] secured another $6.5 million, bringing its total to $71.0 million after 3 weekends.
Joy Ride [JOYRI] grossed $350K million in its third outing for a sum at $12.52 million.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken [GILLM] tallied $176K to bring its fourth weekend total to $15.4 million.
Past Lives [PSTLV] earned $166K in its fourth weekend of wide release, advancing its total across $10.04 million.
