Coming in at the low end of expectations, the exorcism thriller The Rite [TRITE] earned an estimated $15.0 million to top the weekend box office. With word of mouth poor, the film is likely to nose-dive quickly.
Last weekend's number one film, No Strings Attached [NSATA] declined just 31% to $13.7 million for second place. The romantic comedy has banked $39.7 million thus far.
Newcomer The Mechanic [MCHNC] tied for third place with The Green Hornet [GHRNT] in its third outing. Both action pics claimed a gross of $11.5 million.
After securing 12 Oscar nominations, The King's Speech surged 41% to $11.1 million in its 10th week of release.
