Showing The Fast and the Furious franchise is just heating up, the fifth entry Fast Five [FFUR5] reached an estimated $83.6 milion to set the mark for best April opening ever. Fast & Furious held the previous high at $70.9 million. The street racing actioner set in Brazil attracted a diverse crowd and brought in young moviegoers as 52% of the audience was under the age of 25.
After two weeks at the top, Rio [RIO] finished second with $14.4 million. The animated film sits at $103.6 million.
Madea's Big Happy Family [MDBHF] dropped 60% in its second frame to $10 million to take the third spot, while in fourth place Water for Elephant [WELPH] declined 46% in its second weekend to $9.1 million.
Prom [PROM] opened fifth overall with just $5 million. The wholesome film appealed predominantly to girls as the audience was 66% under the age of 18 and 82% females.
The animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil [HDWN2] managed a debut of only $4.1 million, less than a third secured by the original Hoodwinked.
