Nimrod Antal has been confirmed as the director of Predators [PRED3] by AICN. Impressed by his work on the upcoming actioner Armored [ARMRD], producer Robert Rodriquez [RRODR] tapped Antal to revive the Sci-Fi franchis for Fox [FOXX]. 1987's Predator, starring future U.S. Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura, became a popular favorite for its action and story-telling. However, the sequel Predator 2 with Danny Glover [DGLOV] did not live up to expectations, but did plant the seed for film cross-over by showing an Alien skull trophy inside a Predator ship. Unfortunately, the two Alien vs. Predator mash-up features fared even worst.
Fox is counting on Predators to relaunch their franchise in a new direction and make fans forget AVP ever happened. Rodriguez tells AICN, the story "involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors." IIf the premise sounds a lot like Aliens, it's no coincidence. Predators is conceived as the follow-up to Predator the same way Aliens succeeded Alien, multiply the creatures and expand that universe.
Predators is scheduled for release next year on July 7, 2010.
