Despite outspending this summer other superhero films, Warner Bros.' Green Lantern [GLANT] debuted with an estimated $52.7 million, less than those of Thor and X-Men: First Class [XMEN4], The opening is on par with Superman Returns' $52.5 million in 2006, which was not enough to warrant a sequel. The heavily CG film attracted an audience that was mainly older fanboys at 63% over the age of 25 and 64% males. With box office falling 22% on Saturday, Green Lantern looks tob be already frontloaded.
Super 8 [SUPR8] finished in second place at $21.3 million. The retro sci-fi film declined just 40%, bringing its total to$72.8 million.
Fox's Mr. Popper's Penguins [POPNG] opened in third place with $18.2 million. The family film has to contend with Cars 2 as a holdover.
