With a final spell cast on moviegoers, the last film in the fantasy series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 [HPOT8] banked a record $168.6 million for the best opening weekend ever smashing the$158.4 million mark set by The Dark Knight in 2008. The teen wizard also captured the single-day record on Friday at $92.1 million, before falling 53% on Saturday. Deathly Hallows Part 2 was the first film in the franchise to be in 3D, which accounted for 43% of the gross. The audience skewed slightly female at 54%. As fans rushed out to watch the final film, Deathly Hallows Part 2 may be even more frontloaded than the previous installments.
After two weekends at the top, Transformers: Dark of the Moon [TFRM3] steps down to second at $21.3 million. The Autobots and Decepticons have amassed $302.8 milion.
Horrible Bosses [HRBOS] held up exceptionally well in its second weekend, declining just 38% to $17.6 million for third place. Zookeeper [ZOOKP] also maanged a respectable 39% drop to $12.3 million in its sophomore frame.
The weekend's other new wide release, Winnie the Pooh [WPOOH] nabbed $8.0 million to debut in sixth overall. Families comprised 85% of the audience, which should result in long legs.
