The nominations for the 86th Academy Awards were announced earlier today. The Hollywood Stock Exchange offered NominOptions for the leading contenders in the top eight categories and HSX traders collectively successfully predicted 80% of the Oscar nominees. Let’s see how each category broke down.
The Best Picture race has 9 nominees this year: 12 Years A Slave [N4P12Y], American Hustle [N4PAMH], Captain Phillips [N4PCAP], Dallas Buyers Club [N4PDBC], Gravity [N4PGRV], Her [N4PHER], Nebraska [N4PNEB], Philomena [N4PPHI], The Wolf of Wall Street [N4PWWS]. HSX correctly named 7, but left out Dallas Buyers Club and Philomena for Blue Jasmine and Inside Llewyn Davis.
The Best Director nominees were Alexander Payne – Nebraska [N4DAPA], Alfonso Cuaron – Gravity [N4DACU], David O. Russell – American Hustle [N4DDOR], Martin Scorsese – The Wolf of Wall Street [N4DMSC] and Steve McQueen – 12 Years A Slave [N4DSMC]. HSX picked 4 out of 5, missing Alexander Payne with Spike Jonze – Her.
The Best Actor nominees were Bruce Dern – Nebraska [N4ABDE], Chiwetel Ejiofor – 12 Years A Slave [N4ACJI], Christian Bale – American Hustle [N4ACBA], Leonardo DiCaprio – The Wolf of Wall Street [N4ALDI] and Matthew McConaughey – Dallas Buyers Club [N4AMMC]. HSX got 4 out of 5, preferring Tom Hanks – Captain Phillips over Christian Bale.
The Best Actress nominees were Amy Adams – American Hustle [N4CAAD], Cate Blanchett – Blue Jasmine [N4CCBL], Judi Dench – Philomena [N4CJDE], Meryl Streep – August: Osage County [N4CMST] and Sandra Bullock – Gravity [N4CSBU]. HSX scored a perfect 5 for 5.
The Best Supporting Actor nominees were Barkhad Abdi – Captain Phillips [N4RBAB], Bradley Cooper – American Hustle [N4RBCO], Jared Leto – Dallas Buyers Club [N4RJLE], Jonah Hill – The Wolf of Wall Street [N4RJHI], Michael Fassbender – 12 Years A Slave [N4RMFA]. HSX batted 4 for 5, selecting James Gandolfini – Enough Said rather than Jonah Hill.
The Best Supporting Actress nominees were Jennifer Lawrence – American Hustle [N4SJLA], Julia Roberts – August: Osage County [N4SJRO], June Squibb – Nebraska [N4SJSQ], Lupita Nyong’o – 12 Years A Slave [N4SLNY] and Sally Hawkins – Blue Jasmine [N4SSHA]. HSX predicted 4 out of 5, opting for Octavia Spencer – Fruitvale over Sally Hawkins.
The Best Adapted Screenplay nominees were 12 Years A Slave [N4E12Y], Before Midnight [N4EBFM], Captain Phillips [N4ECAP], Philomena [N4EPHI] and The Wolf of Wall Street [N4EWWS]. HSX was once again 4 for 5, leaving out Captain Phillips for August: Osage County.
The Best Original Screenplay nominees were American Hustle [N4OAMH], Blue Jasmine [N4OBLU], Dallas Buyers Club [N4ODBC], Her [N4OHER] and Nebraska [N4ONEB]. HSX went 3 for 5, missing American Hustle and Dallas Buyers Club with Gravity and Inside Llewyn Davis.
