Fantastic Mr. Fox
Showtime: 2:25 p.m.
Venue: Krikorian Vista Village Metroplex 15 (North San Diego County, CA)
23 butts / around 165 seats--didn't get an exact count (14% full)
Snacks: Junior Mints and Water.
Trailers: Walked in a little after showtime, but I caught The Tooth Fairy, Alice in Wonderland, How to Train Your Dragon, and Alvin and the Chipmunks:The Squeakwel.
Box Office Potential: My gut feeling is that this is not good at all. Overall business at the theater was VERY good for a Wednesday, as many area schools are out. (FYI, Old Dogs and Planet 51 were doing the lionshare of the biz this afternoon.) Back at my old multiplex (which was not nearly as big or as popular as this one is), Wallace and Gromit did about 80 people at its first afterschool show, and Corpse Bride hit at least 45. In addition, despite the audience's apparent general enjoyment, I think this one is going to be a very tough sell to some families, as it's very much a Wes Anderson picture. This could mean WOM won't be as positive as the reviews would lead you to believe. Taking that into account, we could very well be looking at a sub-$15m 5-day. My out-of-the-air predictions would be $2m Weds, $2m Thurs, $3.5m Fri, $4m Sat, $3m Sun, for a 5-day of $14.5m and a weekend of $10.5m.
My Take: I think it's Anderson's best picture, although I don't have much of an affinity for his work so that just means it was "good". Funny and sharp, with some great looking images. What more can ya ask for?
