I've been here for ages, and I've achieved just about everything I'm ever going to do on HSX. I'm #5 on the LTD board, and it's basically down to being around for longer, I've never been a day-trader, and never participated in the YTD contests. I already know I'm not a better trader than most of those guys. So I'm not jealous of Roto.
About three years ago, I had some spare time and I started a new fansite called HSXsanity. The intent behind the site was to help new traders get used to HSX. There are rules in the glossary and the FAQ, but there are also a lot of things about HSX that aren't defined - small things like dead delists, community rules like when to tag, and concepts like arb and reset trading.
At the time, there were a lot of new traders who were getting in trouble because they weren't familiar with these things, while the veterans were bored with having to explain the same things over and over. So HSXsanity was a way to help them and to keep the boards more peaceful.
Of course, that turned out not to be the case, because Roto started nitpicking the columns. So, for instance I wrote a column for new traders - it was supposed to be a simple column for beginners to explain the basics of HSX and how to make money by playing the openers and starbonds. Here is a link: http://hsxsanity.blogspot.ca/2012/10/what-are-best-strategies-for-growing-my.html
And you can see what happened when I posted a link to the column on the boards: http://www.hsx.com/forum/forum.php?id=2&pid=207666
Lots of complaints that completely missed the point of the column. (Suggesting I should include Nominoptions, which are not available for 10-11 months of the year. Saying that I should talk about negative ports, in a column for beginner traders. Saying traders completely new to the game should be using the same benchmarks as experienced YTD players) And all made in a hectoring style that seems designed to push as many buttons as possible.
And do you want to know the irony? RotoHockey spent a lot of time complaining on the boards about the rules for things like tagging were not clear. I started HSXsanity in part because I felt that Roto had a point - that there wasn't anywhere for players to go to learn about these things.
This is just one example of Roto's button-pushing over the years, and anyone who has been around since then is tired of it. Nitpicking, pointless milestones, horrible capitalisation, the whole lot. In different ways we've all given up hoping that he'll ever use his powers for niceness instead of evil. Some try and pitchfork him off the boards. I'm certainly not the only trader who has simply stopped replying to Roto's posts, especially not there's software designed to do just that. Some people have even given up on the game because Roto just sucks the life out of the boards.
So the backlash against Roto is not about jealousy, or that he is simply misunderstood. It has everything to do with his persona and the way he treats people on the boards.
